Sodium hydrogen carbonate (872 mg, 10.38 mmol) was added to a suspension of hydroxylamine monohydrochloride (721 mg, 10.38 mmol) in DMSO (3 mL), and the mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 15 min. The precipitate was filtered off, and a solution of tert-butyl (6R,7R)-6-(cyanomethyl)-7-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,4-oxazepane-4-carboxylate (500 mg, 1.30 mmol) in DMSO (4 mL) was added to the filtrate. The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. overnight. To the reaction mixture was added water, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (588 mg). This compound was used for the next reaction without purification.
