Procedure
To a THF (100 mL) solution of 1-bromo-4-[2-(4-fluorophenoxy)ethyl]benzene (3.05 g) was added 1.6 M solution of n-BuLi in n-hexane (6.80 mL) dropwise at −70° C. under an argon atmosphere. After stirring for 30 minutes, DMF (1.20 mL) was slowly added at −70° C. The resultant mixture was stirred and slowly warmed to −40° C. for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was quenched by addition of saturated aqueous NH4Cl, and extracted with AcOEt. The organic layer was washed with water, saturated aqueous NaCl, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane/AcOEt=9/1 to 1/1) to afford 4-[2-(4-fluorophenoxy)ethyl]benzaldehyde as a light yellow solid (1.63 g).
