To a mixed solution of dichlorometahne (1000 ml) and tetrahydrofuran (200 ml) were added 2-(5-amino-1,2,4-thiadiazol-3-yl)-2-(methoxyimino)acetyl chloride (syn isomer) (64 g) and benzhydryl 7-amino-3-chloromethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate hydrochloride (100 g) at -15° C. The mixture was stirred at -15° C. for one hour. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-cooled water, and neutralized with sodium hydrogencarbonate. The organic layer was separated, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with diisopropyl ether to give benzhydryl 7-[2-(5-amino-1,2,4-thiadiazol-3-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-3-chloromethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate (syn isomer) (130.5 g)
