330 mg of sodium hydride (as a 55% w/w dispersion in mineral oil) were added, whilst ice-cooling, to a solution of 1.18 g of p-methoxybenzyl mercaptan in 25 ml of dry dimethylformamide, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. At the end of this time, 2.14 g of (2S, 4R)-1-(t-butoxycarbonyl)-2-carbamoyl-4-methanesulfonyloxypyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (3) above] were added to the mixture, which was then stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was then poured into an aqueous solution of sodium chloride and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with an aqueous solution of sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography through silica gel (eluted with a 2:3 by volume mixture of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate) to afford 1.94 g of the title compound as an oil.
