Procedure

Nicotinaldehyde (10.7 g, 0.1 mol) was dissolved in toluene (100 ml). A 40% aqueous methylamine (23.3 g, 0.3 mol) solution was added. This mixture was subjected to azeotropic dehydration for 3 hours. The produce mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, giving N-nicotinylidenemethylamine (11.7 g, 98% yield). NMR (CDCl3 δ) [ppm]; 3.53 (3 H, d, J=1.7 Hz), 7.3-8.85 (5 H, m).
