880 mg of 4-methoxyphenol was dissolved in 10 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide. 790 mg of potassium t-butoxide was added thereto. Then, 1.7 g of 4-benzyloxy-2-nitro-chlorobenzene was added thereto. The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at 110°-120° C. The reaction mixture was introduced into a mixture of 50 ml of ice water and 50 ml of ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated, washed with water and a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution in this order, and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by a column chromatography (eluant: toluene) to obtain 1.92 g of 5-benzyloxy-2-(4-methoxyphenoxy)nitrobenzene.
