Procedure

50 ml of a 25% aqueous methylamine solution was ice-cooled. Thereto was added 4.1 g of 3-bromo-7-methylsulfonylamino-6-phenoxy-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at 0°-5° C. 100 ml of water was added thereto. The mixture was adjusted to pH 4 with 4N hydrochloric acid and then extracted with 100 ml of ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by a column chromatography (eluant: a 5:1 mixture of toluene and ethyl acetate) and then recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 400 mg (yield: 11.1%) of 3-methylamino-7-methylsulfonylamino-6-phenoxy-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one.
