Procedure

To a suspension of 8-bromo-2,3-dihydropyrrolo[1,2,3-de]-1,4-benzothiazine-5,6-dione (4.6 g) in water (50 ml) was added 2 N sodium hydroxide solution (30 ml) and dissolved. To the solution was added 30% hydrogen peroxide solution (4 ml) at 15° C. After stirring for 30 minutes, the mixture was brought to slightly acidic by the addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The resulting crystals were collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to give the title compound (4.1 g, 92.3%) which was recrystallized from ethanol as pale yellow needles, mp 205°-206° C. (decompd.).
