Procedure

86.2 g of ethyl 1-cyclopropyl-6,7,8-trifluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinoline-carboxylate and 63.3 g of ethyl cyanoacetate are initially introduced into 1,000 ml of dioxane. 15.8 g of NaH are added in portions. The mixture is then heated to reflux for 4 hours. The completeness of the reaction is checked using thin-layer chromatography. After completion of the reaction, water is added dropwise. The mixture is then rendered acidic using dilute HCl and extracted using methylene chloride. The organic phase is dried and evaporated. The residue is recrystallized from isopropanol.
