Procedure

A stirred mixture of 2.8 g (0.01 mole) of 1-[3-(4-fluorophenoxy)-1-azetidinylcarbonyl]piperazine and 1.4 g (0.01 mole) of potassium carbonate in 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran was treated with 1.1 g (0.01 mole) of ethyl chloroformate. After stirring for 15 minutes, a small piece of ice was added and stirring continued for 72 hr. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and the oil which separated solidified on standing. The solid residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel; washed with chloroform and eluted with ethyl acetate) to give the product 2.5 g (71%) which was recrystallized from benzene/ligroin to yield 2.35 g (66.7%) of white crystalline product, m.p. 89°-90° C.
