Procedure
A solution of 600 mg (2.5 mmol) of 2-methyl-3-oxo-5-chloro-1,3,4,8,9,9a-hexahydro-2H-indeno[1,7-cd]azepine, a compound of Formula 16 prepared, for example, as described in Preparation 16, dissolved in 25 ml of THF was combined with 8 ml of a 1M solution of BF3.THF in tetrahydrofuran. The reaction mixture was stored at ambient temperature for 16 hours. A few ml of methanol was added dropwise and the solvents were removed under vacuum. The residue was treated with 25 ml of 5% HCl and digested on a steam bath for 3 hours. After cooling to ambient temperature, the aqueous solution was washed once with ether, made alkaline with NaOH, and extracted with ether. The ether extract was concentrated to give 2-methyl-5-chloro-1,3,4,8,9,9a-hexahydro-2H-indeno[1,7-cd]azepine, a compound of Formula I, as the free base; (HBr salt, ethanol, mp 279°-281° C.).
