A solution of 5.3 g (50 mmole) of 1-(diphenylmethoxy)-3-bromopropane in 50 cm3 of dimethylformamide was added to a mixture of 8.8 g (50 mmole) of 3-(3-methoxyphenyl)pyrrolidine, 13.8 g (100 mmole) of potassium carbonate, a few potassium iodide crystals and 250 cm3 of dimethylformamide. The reactive medium was heated to 80° C. for 12 hours and then filtered after it returned to room temperature. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was taken up with ether and extracted with 500 cm3 of N hydrochloric acid. The aqueous phase was separated, basified with 10N sodium hydroxide solution and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic solution was dried on sodium sulfate. Evaporation of the solvent yielded an oily residue, which was purified by silica gel column filtration (eluent, hexane-ethyl acetate, 1/1). There was obtained 10.3 g (yield: 51.3%) of 1-[3-(diphenylmethoxy)propyl] 3-(3-methoxyphenyl)pyrrolidine.
