To a solution of 1-phenyl-3-carbomethoxy-6-naphthol (Naphthol 11) (2.5 g, 9 mmoL) in dry THF (50 mL) at 0° C. was added (4.8 mL, 2.7 mmoL, 3 eq.) of DIBAL-H. The resulting solution was stirred for 2 hr. Then methanol (excess) was added and the solvent evaporated. The mixture was diluted with EtOAc, washed successively with HCl, 1N, H2O, brine, to give the title compound.
