A solution of 2-methyl-1-oxa-5-azaspiro[2,4]heptane-5-carboxylic acid benzyl ester (Example A9, 0.31 g, 1.25 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) and ammonium hydroxide (7 mL) is heated in a sealed tube at 100° C. for 16 hours. After cooling, the reaction mixture is dissolved ethyl acetate, washed with water, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to afford the title compound (0.340 g). 1H NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.33–7.26 (m, 5H), 5.28 (bs, 2H), 5.07 (s, 2H), 3.56–3.16 (m, 5H), 2.03–1.76 (m, 2H), 1.15 (d, 3H).
