Procedure
Methyl 4-mercaptobenzoate (3.00 g, 17.8 mmol) and tert-butyl 3-(methylsulfonyloxy)azetidine-1-carboxylate (4.48 g, 17.8 mmol) were dissolved in DMF (30 mL). Cs2CO3 (6.97 g, 21.4 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at 90° C. for 3 hours, then cooled to room temperature. EtOAc (50 ml) was added and the solids were filtered off. The filtrate was washed with a saturated aqueous K2CO3 solution (20 mL), dried (MgSO4) and then evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with heptane, EtOAc/heptane (5:95, then 10:90). There was obtained 3.10 g (53%) of 59A as a solid. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.45 (s, 9H), 3.89 (m, 2H), 3.90 (s, 3H), 4.11 (m, 1H), 4.42 (t, 2H), 7.16 (d, 2H), 7.95 (d, 2H).
