Procedure

To the solution of 0.06 mol of L-tryptophan methyl ester and 0.05 mol of benzaldehyde in 150 ml of benzene, 0.5 ml of trifluoroacetic acid and 2 g of molecular sieves (4 Å) were added. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 1 hour, and then 0.138 mol (3 equiv.) of trifluoroacetic acid was added and the mixture was further refluxed for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled down to room temperature and diluted with water and basified with 30% solution of NaOH. The organic layer was separated, dried over MgSO4 and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was washed with diethyl ether, and the precipitate thus formed was filtered off to give the required product (80% yield).
