Procedure

To a stirred suspension of 3-(2,4-dichloro-phenyl)-2-(hydroxyimino)-propionic acid methyl ester (2.0 g; 7.6 mmol) and potassium carbonate (3.2 g; 23 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (15 ml) under argon at 20° C., was added drop wise methyl iodide (4.3 ml; 23 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at 20° C. Water (300 ml) was added to the mixture which was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×150 ml). Combined organics were concentrated, the residue dissolved in 20 ml of dichloromethane, washed twice with water (150 ml), dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure to afford 2.0 g (95% of theory) of 3-(2,4-dichloro-phenyl)-2-(methoxyimino)-propionic acid methyl ester (mixture of E/Z-isomers) as a clear yellow oil.
