A suspension of α-amino-γ-butyrolactone hydrobromide in 30% HBr in HOAc was heated at 100° C. in a sealed tube for 5 days. The mixture was concentrated to give a white solid that was washed with Et2O to provide 23.1 g (64%) of 2-amino-4-bromo-butyric acid hydrobromide.
