A suspension of the product obtained in Step D above (6.5 g, 22.7 mmol) in 230 ml of acetone is stirred for 24 hours in the presence of 18.4 g (86.0 mmol) of sodium meta-periodate and 70 ml of aqueous 1M ammonium acetate solution. The acetone is evaporated off using a rotary evaporator and, after adding water, the reaction mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phases are combined, washed (NaCl) and dried (MgSO4) to yield, after evaporation, the expected product.
