Procedure
A suspension of NaH (60% in mineral oil, 1.394 g, 34.9 mmol) in DMF (35 mL) was treated drop-wise with diisopropyl malonate (5.30 mL, 27.9 mmol) followed by cyclobutane-1,1-diylbis(methylene)bis(4-methylbenzenesulfonate) (5.92 g, 13.94 mmol) and KI (0.231 g, 1.394 mmol) and heated at 140° C. overnight. The mixture was cooled to RT, poured on satd. NH4Cl, extracted with hexane (2×) and the combined organics were washed with H2O, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to dryness to afford crude diisopropyl spiro[3.3]heptane-2,2-dicarboxylate (5.17 g, 138%) which was carried on without purification.
