To a mixture of lithium aluminum hydride (2.58 g) and THF (300 mL) was added ethyl 2′-fluoro-5′-methoxy-4-((4-methoxybenzyl)oxy)biphenyl-2-carboxylate (18.6 g) at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 20 min. To the reaction mixture was added sodium sulfate decahydrate (22.4 g), and the mixture was filtered. The solvent of the filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give the title compound (13.2 g) as a colorless oil.
