5-(4-Bromophenyl)-1H-naphtho[1,2-e][1,4]diazepin-2(3H)-one (380 mg, 1.04 mmol), benzophenone imine (349 mg, 2.08 mmol), sodium tert-butoxide (200 mg, 2.08 mmol), palladium(II) acetate (23 mg, 0.104 mmol), and 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (60 mg, 0.208 mmol) were dissolved in anhydrous dioxane (5 mL), and the solution was stirred at 110° C. for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was left to cool, and then poured into water, and the mixture was extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was washed with saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (chloroform/methanol=100/1) to give the title compound (154 mg, yield 49%).
