Procedure

A solution of 3-aminopropan-1-ol (3 g, 39.9 mmol) and benzaldehyde (4.05 mL, 39.9 mmol) in methanol (200 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The solution was cooled to 0° C., and sodium borohydride (1.813 g, 47.9 mmol) was added slowly in several portions. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for three hours, and then it was partitioned between water and dichloromethane (3x). The organic extracts were combined and dried over Na2SO4, the drying agent was removed by filtration, and the solution was concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as an oil (6.5 g, 98%).
