A mixture of 5-(methylamino)-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene hydrochloride(1.8 g, 6.94 mmol), ethyl 3-(4-bromethoxyphenyl)-2-ethoxypropanoate (2.4 g, 6.95 mmol), potassium carbonate (2.9 g, 21 mmol) and dimethylformamide (7 ml) was heated at 100° C. for 5 h. Benzene (200 ml) and water (200 ml) were added and the phases were separated. The organic phase was dried and the solvent evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel eluting with benzene/chloroform to give 2.2 g (65%) of the title compound as an oil. RF=0.60 (chloroform/ethanol/ammonia=20:2:0.1)
