Procedure

t-Butyl 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-5-methylimidazole-4-carboxylate (70 mg, 0.24 mmol) was mixed with 4-fluoro-1-nitrobenzene (27 μL, 0.25 mmol) and potassium carbonate (66 mg, 0.48 mmol) in dry DMF and heated at 120° C. for 4 h. The mixture was diluted with water and filtered to give a yellow solid which was chromatographed over silica gel (40% EtOAc in hexane) to afford a yellow solid (72 mg, 73%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.20 (m, 2H), 7.51 (m, 1H), 7.25 (m, 5H), 2.45 (s, 3H), 1.66 (s, 9H).

Workup

  1. filtrationfiltered
  2. customto give a yellow solid which
  3. customwas chromatographed over silica gel (40% EtOAc in hexane)
