Procedure

o-Isopropylaniline (11.2 g, 79.1 mmol) was dissolved in ether (60 ml) and the ether saturated with HCl gas was added dropwise to afford a white precipitate. The precipitate was collected and dried (13.0 g). The precipitate (2.23 g, 13.6 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (6 ml), activated charcoal (500 mg) was added, and the mixture was filtered through celite filter aid. The resultant clear filtrate was placed in a centrifuge tube and ether (28 ml) was added slowly to give white needles (1.06 g, 6.16 mmol). mp 183-184° C.
