A suspension of 2,3-dihydro-1H-isoindol-1-one 4 (7 gm, 0.04 mol.) in ethyl acetate and aq. NaHCO3 solution, was treated with mono-methyloctadioic acid chloride at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 min. The solid that separated was filtered and dried under vacuum to give 2,3-dihydro-1H-isoindol-1-one 85, which was hydrolyzed by KOH (5 eq) in ethanol at 0° C. to generate acid 59 (5.775 gm).
