A solution of 1-(4-benzyloxyphenyl)pentan-1,4-dione (5.00 g, 17.7 mmol), 3-amino-1-propanol (1.33 g, 17.7 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (253 mg, 1.33 mmol) in toluene (100 ml) was refluxed for 12 hours under heating using Dean-Stark's apparatus, and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=4:1) to give the object compound as a solid. 4.50 g (yield: 79.1%)
