Procedure
To a slurry of 10 g. (0.0523 mole) of 1-(p-tolyl)biguanide in 175 ml of water is added dropwise 8.4 g. (0.053 mole) of bromine over a period of 3 hours. The reaction mixture is cooled and the unreacted bromine discharged with sodium bisulfite. The mixture is made strongly alkaline and extracted into ether. The ether layer is dried over Na2SO4, charcoaled, filtered and evaporated to obtain 1-(2-bromo-4-methylphenyl)biguanide.
