Procedure

To 2-methylthio-3-n-hexylcinnamic acid (1.39 g, 0.005 mmol) in 25 ml of CH2Cl2 is added oxalyl chloride (0.9, 0.01 mmol) and DMF (0.365 g, 0.005 mmol) with cooling in an ice bath. The bath was removed and the reaction mixture stirred at room temperature for 2 hours to afford 2-methylthio-3-n-hexylcinnamic acid chloride.
