A mixture of 5 g (44 mmol) of 2-nitroimidazole and 6.1 g of K2CO3 in 50 ml of DMF was heated at 60° C. for 0.5 hours; then 6.61 g (44 mmol) of 3-(2-chloroethyl)-2-oxazolidinone was added and stirring continued for 18 hours; at 60° C.. The mixture was then cooled and concentrated. The residue was partitioned between CHCl3 and water, the organic layer was dried and concentrated to a solid. The solid was crystallized from ethanol to give 3.5 g (35%) of the desired product, 3-[2-(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]-2-oxazolidinone; mp 103°-104° C.
