Procedure

A mixture of the phenol from Step 1 (150 g), (+) 2-bromo-propionitrile and milled potassium carbonate in methylethyl ketone (1 L) was refluxed for 8 hrs. The reaction mixture was cooled and filtered. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate/hexane afforded the title compound m.p. 118°-120°.
