A mixture of 10.0 g (0.032 mole) of 1-(2,4-dichloro-5-hydroxyphenyl)-4-difluoromethyl-4,5-dihydro -3-methyl-1,2,4-triazol-5(1H)-one, 5.52 g (0.040 mole) of potassium carbonate, and 7.02 g (0.040 mole) of 3-chloro-4-fluoronitrobenzene in 60 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide was stirred at room temperature for approximately 18 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water. This aqueous mixture was extracted with diethyl ether. The extract :;as dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and was filtered. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure leaving a residue. This residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel to yield 10.4 g of 1-[2,4-dichloro-5-(2-chloro-4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl]-4-difluoromethyl -4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-1,2,4-triazol-5(1H)-one as a solid, m.p. 135°-135.5° C., compound 179 of Table 1.
