20.0 mmol of sodium hydride (60% dispersion in paraffin) are added to a solution of 20.0 mmol of (1-trityl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methanol [33769-07-02] in 120 ml of absolute N,N-dimethylformamide under argon. The mixture is heated at 100° C. for 1 hour and then cooled to 40° C. A solution of 20.0 mmol of 4-oxiranylbenzonitrile [52695-39-3] in 10 ml of absolute N,N-dimethylformamide is added dropwise at 35-40° C., and the reaction mixture is stirred at 40° C. for 15 minutes. The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature, poured into ice-water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulphate and evaporated. The title compound is obtained as a white solid from the residue by flash chromatography (SiO2 60 F). Rf=0.29 (dichloromethane-methanol 95:5); Rt=4.26 (gradient I).
