3-(2-Chloro-4-methoxy-phenyl)-2-(2-chloro-pyridin-4-yl)-1,1,1-trifluoro-butan-2-ol (13.35 g, 0.0351 mol) was dissolved in 48% HBr (250 ml) and stirred at 105° C. (bath temperature) for 7 h. The mixture was poured on ice-water-brine and saturated aqueous NaHCO3 and extracted with AcOEt. The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue foam was treated with heptane over night. The precipitation was filtered and dried to give the title compound (12.5 g) as a white solid. MS (m/e, ISP neg. ion)=364.3 [M−H+].
