Procedure

1-Octyl-5-bromo-6-methyl-7-nitroindoline (4.0 g) was dissolved in N-methylpyrrolidone (40 ml), and copper cyanide (1.9 g) was added, which was followed by stirring at 190° C. for 1 hr. Ethyl acetate (100 ml) and water (100 ml) were added to the reaction mixture. The insoluble matter was filtered off. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Ethyl acetate was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: ethyl acetate/n-hexane=1/5-1/3) to give 2.4 g of oily 1-octyl-5-cyano-6-methyl-7-nitroindoline.
