In a mixture of sodium formate (22 mg), 87% formic acid (0.3 ml) and 37% formalin (25 μl ) and 1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-methoxy-4-oxo-7-(1-piperazinyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid (60 mg) was stirred for 2 hours at 100° to 120° C. After cooling, water (1 ml) was added to the reaction mixture and then concentrated. To the residue was added water (0.5 ml), adjusted to pH 7 with 1 N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and the solution was allowed to stand in a refrigerator. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with water to give the title compound (33 mg) as colorless needles, mp 229°-232° C. (decompd.).
