Procedure

The 3-(3-methoxyphenyl)butyltriphenylphosphonium bromide is prepared by refluxing a mixture of 1-bromo-3-(3-methoxyphenyl)butane (19.09 g., 78.5 mmoles) and triphenyl phosphine (20.5 g., 78.5 mmoles) in xylene (60 ml.) for 18 hours. The reaction mixture is then cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filter cake is washed with ether and dried in a vacuum desicator to give the product.
