A solution of 75 ml. of 33% methylamine in ethanol was added to a solution of 10.1 g. of N-cyano-N'-[2-(5-methyl-4-imidazolylmethylthio)ethyl]-S-methylisothiourea in 30 ml. of ethanol. The reaction mixture was set aside at ambient temperature for 2.5 hours. Following concentration under reduced pressure, the residue was recrystallized twice from isopropanolpetroleum ether to give N-cyano-N'-methyl-N"-[2-(5-methyl-4-imidazolylmethylthio)ethyl]guanidine, m.p. 141°-143°.
