A mixture of 3 g of 2-methoxyacetophenone, 2.9 g of selenium dioxide, 20 ml of dioxane and 2 ml of water is treated in the same manner as described in Example 5-(1). 2.9 g of 2-methoxyphenylglyoxal hydrate are thereby obtained as a crude oil.
