Procedure

To a warm suspension of 3-acetyl-1,2-dihydrocyclohepta[b]pyrrole-2-one [1.87 g, described by T. Nozoe et al., Bull. Chem. Soc. Japan, 38, 306 (1965)] in dimethyl formamide (DMF, 25 ml), potassium carbonate (1.66 g) and ethyl bromoacetate (2.84) were added successively. The mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 18 hr and then diluted with water. The precipitate was collected and dried to give 3-acetyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxocyclohepta[b]pyrrole-1-acetic acid ethyl ester, mp 162°-165° C.; nmr (CDCl3) δ1.33 (t, J=7 Hz, 3H), 2.75 (s, 3H), 4.25 (q, J=7 Hz, 2H), 4.9 (s, 2H), 7.4 (m, 4H), 9.4 (d, J=10 Hz, 1H).
