A mixture of 250 mg (0.656 mmole) of 4-chloromethyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-[4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]-1H-imidazole (Example 159, Step 1) and 86 mg (1.3 mmol) of potassium cyanide in 4 ml of dimethylformamide was stirred at 85° C. for 24 hours. An additional 86 mg of potassium cyanide was added, and stirring continued for 8 hours. After cooling, the mixture was partitioned between dichloromethane and water and the aqueous layer further extracted with dichloromethane. The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated. Chromatography of the residue over silica gel using 60% ethyl acetate in toluene, followed by trituration with ethyl acetate gave the title compound, 59 mg, as a very pale yellow crystalline solid: mp (DSC) 197° C. Anal. Calc'd. for C18H14ClN3O2S (MW 371.85): C, 58.14; H, 3.80; N, 11.30. Found: C, 57.92; H, 3.57; N, 11.01.
