To a solution of ethyl 2-amino-5-chloro-6-[(2,2-dimethylpropanoyl)amino]nicotinate (EXAMPLE 1, METHOD A, Step 2, 5 g, 16.7 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (150 mL) were added potassium carbonate (5.1 g, 36.6 mmol) and chloroacetyl chloride (2.7 mL, 33.3 mmol) at 0° C. under nitrogen. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 2 h and at room temperature for 15 h. After addition of water, the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and washed with brine. The combined organic layer was dried over sodium sulfite and concentrated to give the title compound as a pale yellow solid.
