Procedure
A solution of N-(2,2-diphenylethyl)-2-(methylsulphonyl)-9-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl-9H-purin-6-amine (Preparation 4) (20.1 g, 42.1 mmol) in dry N,N-dimethylformamide (100 ml) was treated with potassium cyanide (5.5 g, 84.6 mmol) and the mixture was heated at 120° C. for 24 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was then cooled to room temperature, poured into water (1000 ml) and stirred for a further 1 hour. The resultant solid was slowly filtered and washed several times with water. The solid was then dissolved in dichloromethane and the resulting solution was washed with water, dried (anhydrous magnesium sulphate), filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was azeotroped from diethyl ether twice to afford the title compound as an oil (17 g).1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 8.00 (1H, s), 7.40-7.20 (10H, m), 6.00-5.75 (1H, br s), 5.70 (1H, d), 4.40-4.20 (3H, m), 4.20-4.10 (1H, m), 3.80-3.70 (1H, m), 2.20-1.90 (3H, m), 1.90-1.60 (3H, m).
