Procedure
The synthesis was carried out in methylene chloride at 0° C. A solution of 2-bromopropionyl bromide in methylene chloride was added dropwise to a mixture of 2-azidoethanol in methylene chloride, triethylamine was added to neutralize the formed hydrobromic acid. After stirring at room temperature over-night water was added and the organic layer was extracted three times with water, the organic phase was then dried and the solvent evaporated. The product was a mixture of byproducts and had to be separated via silica gel column producing pure 2-azidoethyl 2-bromopropionate. Characterization was made with 1H-NMR and FT-IR.
