Procedure

The sodium salt of 3-acetyl-bicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2,4-dione (Example 50a; 3.2 g; 17.2 mmol) is dissolved in 2N HCl (90 ml) and refluxed for 7 hours, evaporated to dryness, taken up in CH2Cl2 and purified via chromatography (SiO2; eluents: CH2Cl2followed by TBME then TBME/EtOH 95:5) to deliver the title compound as yellow crystals (1.1 g; 51%).
