To a solution of 4.0 N HCl in dioxane (20.0 mL) was added tert-butyl 3-cyclohexyl-3-[(methylthio)methyl]-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-8-carboxylate (3-5) (0.870 g, 2.46 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for three hours and the volatiles were removed under vacuum to give (3-6) as a pale solid.
