Procedure

A mixture of ethyl 7-(1-methylethoxy)-5-{[5-(methylsulfonyl)pyridin-2-yl]oxy}-1H-indole-2-carboxylate (10.7 g), 1M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (50 mL), ethanol (50 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 2 h. 1M Hydrochloric acid (50 mL) was added to the mixture and the mixture was adjusted to pH=6 by 1M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and water. The whole was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound (6.35 g, 64%) as a brown amorphous solid. MS 391 (MH+).
