Procedure
A mixture of 1-[4-(3-fluorophenyl)-1-methylisoquinolin-3-yl]ethanone (222 mg, 0.795 mmol) and ammonium acetate (613 mg, 7.95 mmol) in methanol (4.5 mL) and acetonitrile (4.5 mL) was heated at 65° C. in a sealed tube for 30 minutes. After cooling to room temperature, sodium cyanoborohydride (99.9 mg, 1.59 mmol) was added to the resulting mixture. The reaction was heated at 65° C. for another 4 hours, then cooled to room temperature and quenched with sat. sodium bicarbonate and extracted with dichloromethane. The combined extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to dryness. The crude product was used directly in the next step (215 mg, 97%). LCMS calculated for C18H18FN2 (M+H)+: m/z=281.1; Found: 281.1.
