Procedure
A mixture of 1-[4-chloro-1-(3-fluorophenyl)-2-naphthyl]ethanone (58 mg, 0.19 mmol) and ammonium acetate (150 mg, 1.94 mmol) in methanol (1.1 mL) and acetonitrile (1.1 mL) was heated at 65° C., in a sealed tube for 30 minutes. After cooling to room temperature, sodium cyanoborohydride (24.4 mg, 0.388 mmol) was added to the resulting mixture. The reaction was heated at 65° C. for another 4 hours, then cooled to room temperature and quenched with sat. sodium bicarbonate and extracted with dichloromethane. The combined extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to dryness. The crude material was used directly in the next step (58 mg, 100%). LCMS calculated for C18H13ClF (M−NH2)+: m/z=283.1; Found: 283.0.
